Sick of Piss-Poor Research Protocols & Badly Researched Articles

via Global Shift to Obesity Packs Serious Climate Consequences – Scientific American

First off, let’s talk about the so-called “research.”  The “study” they completed is all from data gathered by the World Health Organization (WHO), followed by math to massage the data.

Original report: The Weight of Nations: an Estimation of Adult Human Biomass

The math defines the impact on climate by using average BMI per country and average height per company, shown in the linked original file. And sadly, the writers made some assumptions that automatically supported their theory (they admit it).

My problem is the BMI as a variable in humanity is affected by more than just height.  It requires data on muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and racial and sex differences.

Scientific statements are weak when only based on two criteria. This report is based on statistics alone, and even WHO states that they do not have all of the required information.  Plus, many of the statistics and demographics were provided by each country themselves, via another set of population demographics.  These statistics often rely upon self-reported census data.

Second, the click-bait headline deceives.

Yes, there is an impact on the environment, but not solely because of obesity.  It’s about transportation.

The issue both the article and the original report have is that they go straight to emotional manipulation.  AND both items are based on the myth that all fat people eat too damned much.  While some fat people do, NOT all of them do.  There are SO many other factors in what makes for an overweight person fat.

What bothers me the most is that, in essence, the both the article and the report are just continuing to blame those ‘different’ in society for all of the evils in the world.
